Day 21

I had to go get blood work done today. When I was leaving, I noticed this pretty cool painted garage door. No idea who painted it, if it was a project, graffiti or someone just felt like doing it. When I left I went and sat in the lark for a few minutes. I took a shot of the playground. Made me think of how excited I was when I was a kid to see a playground. Now I just think most of them seem dirty :(
I saw the biggest ant I have ever seen in my life there too but he was moving way to fast to get a decent shot with my camera phone.
My last shot is of a lobster. It was endless shrimp at red lobster and I went with some people I used to work with. Was good to see them all :) we had a pretty decent amount of time to wait so I took some pics of the lobsters in the tanks. Soooo full after that though!

More to come tomorrow!

Here are my photos for today. Enjoy!

Day 20

My picture for the 20th day is a little different. Nothing really caught my eye. Until I got home. I was hanging a towel up to dry and noticed the texture of one if them. Sometimes there's nothing better then a nice soft towel :)
I did use my flash this time. The reason was, it highlights the closest part of the towel, the part I wanted to focus on.
It also created more depth in the texture and highlighted the contrast between lights and shadows.

Here is my photo for today. Enjoy.

Day 19

I'm a little behind since I forgot to post the other day so I'm double posting today! I am keeping with my project though, as the photos were all taken are the correct days :)
My photos from yesterday were from my walk home. I went a little different way again and walked through part of the "new" downtown. Of course some of the older more historic buildings are still there :)

Day 18

Ok, so I forgot to post yesterday.
I did however, have a very cool experience! I have always loved the Volkswagen Bus. When I was in high school there was one parked by the shop class. It was baby blue. I wanted that thing so bad hahaha. I was determined to have one. I don't, nor have a really even seen one quite like that again. Until yesterday.
I discovered a women I work with has one and I actually got to sit in it. I know it sounds silly but that made me day!
Here is a pic of the logo on the front. Loved it :)

Day 17

Oh long days really take it outta me. Didn't have a huge opportunity to take any photos today as I worked a long shift, but snapped this one quick before I left work.
A slightly different angle again of a flower. This time a sunflower. There so pretty and always remind me of fall.

More to come tomorrow!

Day 16

Still quite tired from all the fun and excitement (and LOTS of walking$ from yesterday. Kept it pretty quiet today. Mostly just worked on some photos and went to my mother in laws for dinner.

One of my photos today touches on the topic of perspective I've mentioned a couple of times already. Most of the time when people are photographing flowers, they shoot them straight on. Try changing it up and see what you get!
This is a photo from behind the flower instead of from straight on.
Off to bed now, long day ahead of me tomorrow!

Here are my photos for today. Enjoy!

Day 15

Ok to today was AWESOME! My husband and I went to Toronto to fan expo. It's like the Canadian comicon. There was sooooo many people this year we couldn't believe it!
I'll keep this short since I have to kinda double post today (oops!)
So, when I was a kid my favorite show was The X Files. Honestly it pretty much still is. I've never found anything to come even close to how much I loved (still do though) that show when I was a kid.
My picture today is of Gillian Anderson. It's not the greatest but I don't even care :) it just shows I was right by her :)
More to come tomorrow

Day 14

Ok, so I fell asleep last night without posting. BUT I did take photos yesterday so it still counts :)
My photos for the day are from this little pathway I found in my neighbourhood. I was walking to the corner store and thought I would look for a slightly different route. I found a little walk way and there was this pretty neat little multicolored bench. I have 2 photos of it. Remember the other day when I mentioned perspective? Well I have 1 photo taken straight on. A standard shot. The other is slightly angled and makes the bench feel longer. Changing angles can change the whole feel of the photo. Gives it substance.
The other photo I have was kind of an accident shot. The reason I included it is it almost look like there is someone standing there. It looks like legs. There was no one around! Pretty crazy if you ask me :)

Stay tuned for tonights post!! I'm thinking it will be awesome! My husband and I are off to fan expo and it is star studded this year!

Day 13

What a long week! Thank goodness it's almost over.
As a little treat to myself today, I bought a fudgesicle. Mmmmm fudgesicle :)
My first picture today is of my little treat half eaten on my walk home tonight.
My second picture today is not much but actually a lot at the same time :)
I went over to the bus station today and bought tickets for my husband and I to go to Toronto on Saturday .... for Fanexpo!! It's like the Canadian version of comicon! Ya we're huge nerds :)
I'm soooo excited to go this year! My absolute favorite all-time tv show is The X-Files. Gillian Anderson, who played agent Dana Scully, is going to be there this year!! Sooooo stoked :)
Which reminds me, I have to go find my X-Files t-shirt...
More to come tomorrow!!

Day 12

I read an interesting article this morning. It was about basic things you can do to be inspired and boost your creativity.
One of the things it mentioned was to change up part of your basic daily routine. Most notably, you walk/drive to work.
I had a few things to do after work today so I decided to walk home on a slightly different path. So often, when I walk to/from work, I miss little things or don't even remember parts of my walk because it's routine and I see the same things everyday.
Today my photos are of 2 buildings and a tree. I took the photo of the tree for 2 reason. 1 because I love trees and 2 because I have a bad habit of not looking up lol. Now, I don't mean this like a "Shawn of the Dead" dogs can't look up kinda way. Just in a way that I tend to look at the ground when I am walking. I took this one from underneath looking up. Again, changing your perspective and completely change your image!

What makes you more creative?

More to come tomorrow.

Day 11

I told myself when I started this blog "don't just post photos of Indy everyday!". Well, today is day 11 and I realized I haven't posted even 1 yet! I need to correct that :)
This is my baby. His name is Indy. If you want to get technical, his full name is Indiana Thomas Superbowl Saturday Night Fever Jarvis. His name is Indy because "Indiana was the dogs name" hopefully some of you get the reference :) The other names were added over time by my husband and I (we aren't crazy, promise lol).
He just turned 5 and he's amazing. He's super smart, has a TERRIBLE obsession with chocolate and is the best little cuddlier ever!
Honestly, I could talk about him forever, but I won't.
For some reason, I seem to always end up doing his photos in black and white. I have 3 for you today. 1 from my camera phone (cause that's the whole point) and 2 older ones from my DSLR and edited in Lightroom.

More to come tomorrow!

Day 10

First off, I just want to say how much I LOVE the Olympics! Lol I know there over, which sucks. I've been watching a documentary series on the best Olympic moments and I'm getting so into it I almost forgot to post some photos today!
Ok so here they are!
Nothing truly special today, just some cutlery. But, it does show you that you can take a photo of absolutely anything and make it yours and unique just by changing your view point. Next time you want to take a picture, take it of something you see everyday. This time though, try to see it from a different view :) it can be very fun!

Anyway, back to the Olympics!

More to come tomorrow.

Day 9

Ah the weekend is over :( Where does the time go?
My photos today are of 2 lovely doggies that are not mine. Lucky and Kessel.
What I am going to demonstrate with 2 of the photos, is a comparison between black and white and colour. For me, I love black and white and tend to use it to invoke more emotion or to really define my subject matter. When I am really caught up in a photo and it "speaks" to me, I like to try it in black and white.
Which brings me to my first point. I always, ALWAYS, shoot in full colour. This way, if I want to change it to black and white I can, or I can keep it in colour. There's nothing worse then really wanting a photo in colour and you've taken in black and white. Always give your self the option.
My second point is what I touched on before.
Emotion and subject matter.
Altering a photo to black and white greatly defines the subject of your photo. If it's to cluttered or not a well defined subject, it will definitely be highlighted more in black and white.
For example, my first photo of Lucky, you are drawn to her eye and nose. In the second photo, the black and white, you are also drawn to her eye but this time there is feeling there. It's not a dull and the first photo.
Look between the two and see what feelings they bring out in you. After all, photography is subjective :)

Enjoy the last bit of the weekend!

More to come tomorrow.

Day 8

Ok, so I'm about 20 mins past midnight but I'm still counting this as today's post :)
Today's photos are from my walk today. Two are of a beautiful weeping willow that I've shot before. It was one of my first photos when I got a lot more serious into my photography endeavor.
I've always loved the beauty of Weeping Willows, they just seem very peaceful to me.
The first one is a stunning berry I noticed growing on a tree. It was such a beautiful orange it caught my eye and I had to capture it!

Well, that's about all for today.

More to come tomorrow.

Here are my photos for today. Enjoy!

Day 7

Good evening everyone.
Today's photos are of a squirrel I met on my walk home. I'm going to name him Bill to illustrate what I want to explain.
One of the most basic rules of photography is called the "rule of thirds". To understand this, think of your frame divided into 3 sections. You can usually have a grid enabled on your camera or phone to help with this. The rule states that your subject matter should be located either in 1/3 or 2/3 of the shot. My 2nd and 3rd photos demonstrate this. The 2nd one shows Bill and the fence in the bottom third of the image. The 3rd one shows Bill and the fence in the bottom 2/3 of the photo. I personally like one with Bill in the bottom 1/3 but that just my opinion.
The reason for this, is it is supposed to be more pleasing to the eye. This will actually bring your eye through the image more then if it was in the center.
My last photo is of Bill smack dab in the middle of the photo. See how unappealing this is? It does nothing for the image. It makes it stagnant and does not "lead" you though the image.
Hopefully that quick explanation helps you with your own photos :)

More to come tomorrow.

Day 6

I'm so tired right now I almost fell asleep without posting!
My photo today I took while walking home from work. I was attempting to capture motion. How I took it was I held my phone by my side with the camera on and tried to hold it straight. While hitting the "shutter" I kept walking. Because the camera does not have a setting to speed up the exposure time, it caught the motion quite nice.

I threw in a second photo of a car I saw tonight and had to take a photo of it. I liked it! ;) lol

More to come tomorrow.

Day 5

Today I took a little walk downtown. I had to go to the bank and on my way I really noticed how nice some of the buildings are starting to look. Unfortunately, the city I live in is somewhat known for our downtown. The movie Silent Hill was filmed here and, lets just say they had to spruce it up some to make it look like a ghost town. That's our downtown.
Laurier university is greatly taking over most of the buildings which is wonderful for our town. I have 2 photos today of the same building.
My purpose in taking these 2 were not only because I love the look of the new building, but I want to quickly explain another photo technique.
This technique is called "leading lines" I'm sure there are many many different terms for it but I like this one the best.
What leading lines does is uses a natur occurring directionality of something to draw you in. For example, the first photo is of the corner of the building. You want to look at the doors but your eye is drawn through the picture due to the angle of the sidewalk and tree on the left. The sidewalk is "leading" you through the rest of the image to rest on the tree.
Until tomorrow, which is about 5 minutes away (just made it!) have a good one :)

Day 4

Today I've decided to share something a little different. Hopefully, it will be helpful in taking your own photos.
The first photo is the shadow of a leaf. The second is taken in the same spot but with the built in flash on. I'm showing you these to demonstrate the importance of light in photography (or the lack there of).
Depending on the light source used, it can dramatically alter your image. I personally try to use my flash as little as possible. Especially when it come to my camera phone, I would much much rather ADD a light source then use the flash. This would be either turning on a lamp, changing angle for better light or even use a flash light where you can determine where the light will hit your subject.
The moral of this story kids, is most built in flash is extremely unflattering and very rarely adds anything to your image.
My third photo I have uploaded maybe hard to figure out. It's one of mine, and my dogs, favorite things to eat. As soon as I even reach for it in the cupboard, Indy goes absolutely crazy! For a dog that very, very rarely barks, he sure does when I don't share.

It's peanut butter!!!

Here are my photos for today! Enjoy!

Day 3

Weeds. I have weeds. I actually have LOTS of weeds. Until my husband and I bought our house, I never fully understood the term "grow like a weed".
So today I decided to try a natural weed killer. It's a mixture of vinegar, salt and a dash of dish soap. We'll see how it works out. I must say though, if you are going to attempt this, WEAR GLOVES! I didn't and very quickly discovered I had a cut on my finger. Ouch! Salt and vinegar in a wound is terrible hahaha.
My photos today are of a weed, which hopefully will be gone soon, and a nice little snail I met while spraying my concoction on said weeds.

On a side note, I found a photo contest today and entered it. You can vote for me here, which would be most appreciated :)

Day 2

Good evening. Toady I have 3 photos for you!
The first is someone I'd like you to meet. This is Sid. He is my mother-in-laws dog and Indy's (my gorgeous doggy) best friend. He's a cute little guy but he definitely puts up a fight. My nickname for him is "Sid Vicious".

Sunday's we have dinner with my mother-in-law but today, since the closing ceremonies for the Olympics (ya!) were on and I HAD to watch, we did breakfast.

My other 2 photos I've uploaded today are of flowers and a tomato. "What are things that grow in my mother-in-laws backyard? for $200 Alex".
On that note, hahaha, enjoy the photos!

More to follow tomorrow.
